How to Study NCERT for UPSC

  1. Start from Class 6 and go till Class 12don’t skip early classes; basics matter.
  2. Make notes while reading – highlight important dates, events, definitions, and diagrams.
  3. Focus on diagrams and maps – especially in geography and history.
  4. Revise multiple times – at least 2–3 revisions before prelims.
  5. Solve questions – at the end of chapters and previous year questions.
  6. Link NCERT with current events – for example, link geography concepts to climate change news.
  7. Use as base, not end – once confident, proceed to advanced books like Laxmikanth for polity, Bipin Chandra for history, etc.

Relevance of Class 12 Biology for UPSC (CSE – Prelims & Mains)

Class 12 Biology is indirectly but importantly relevant, especially for Prelims and GS-III in Mains. You don’t need to study it as a separate subject, but many concepts overlap.

1. UPSC Prelims – HIGH relevance ✅

Most Environment & Ecology and some Science & Tech (Biotech) questions are based on Class 11–12 Biology concepts.

2. UPSC Mains – Moderate relevance ⚖️

Helpful mainly in GS Paper III.

  • Environment: biodiversity loss, invasive species, conservation
  • Biotechnology: GM crops, gene editing, ethical concerns
  • Health: vaccines, immunity, disease control
