UPSC Civil Services Examination –
Mains (Descriptive Stage)
The UPSC Mains Examination is the second and most crucial stage of the Civil Services Examination. It evaluates a candidate’s analytical ability, depth of understanding, clarity of thought, and written expression rather than mere factual knowledge.
1. Nature of the Exam
- Type: Descriptive (answer-writing)
- Medium: Any language listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution
- Total Papers: 9
- Evaluated Papers: 7
- Qualifying Papers: 2 (marks not added to merit)
