UPSC Civil Services Examination – 

Mains (Descriptive Stage)

The UPSC Mains Examination is the second and most crucial stage of the Civil Services Examination. It evaluates a candidate’s analytical ability, depth of understanding, clarity of thought, and written expression rather than mere factual knowledge.

1. Nature of the Exam

  • Type: Descriptive (answer-writing)
  • Medium: Any language listed in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution
  • Total Papers: 9
  • Evaluated Papers: 7
  • Qualifying Papers: 2 (marks not added to merit)

  • Two papers, deep conceptual + analytical questions
