Saltwater Crocodile (Crocodylus porosus)
- Largest & heaviest reptile in the world.
- Other Names: Estuarine crocodile, Indo-Pacific crocodile, sea crocodile, “saltie”.
- Type: Opportunistic, hypercarnivorous apex predator.
Distribution
- Found in saltwater & brackish wetlands.
- Range: East coast of India → Southeast Asia → Sundaic region → N. Australia → Micronesia.
Features
- Male: ~5 m, ~500 kg.
- Female: <3 m, <100 kg.
- Coloration: Dark greenish-brown with lighter underbelly → camouflage.
- Skin: Thick, armored scales for protection.
- Behavior: Solitary, territorial (males control large areas).
Conservation
- IUCN Red List: Least Concern.
