Paradip Port – Key Points
- Location: Only major port in Odisha; on the Bay of Bengal at the Mahanadi River delta.
- Distances: ~210 nautical miles south of Kolkata; ~260 nautical miles north of Visakhapatnam.
- Strategic Importance: Serves a wide hinterland – Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal.
- Administration:
- Autonomous body under the Major Port Trusts Act, 1963.
- Functions under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways.
- Administered by a Board of Trustees nominated by the GoI, including shippers, ship owners, government departments, and labour representatives.
- Recent Achievement: Handled 150.41 MMT cargo (2024-25), joining the 150 MMT club, and retained top position among India’s major ports.
- Current Issue: A decomposed body was found in a coal wagon at Paradip Port’s coal handling plant—second such incident recently.
