Sliteye Shark Loxodon Microrhinus

Sliteye Shark (Loxodon macrorhinus):

  • Family & Genus: Requiem shark, family Carcharhinidae; only member of genus Loxodon.
  • Distinctive Feature: Slit-like eyes (better vision in low light).
  • Size & Body: Small-bodied; slender; long narrow face; large eyes; ~95 cm max length.
  • Teeth: Small, pointed with smooth edges.
  • Fins: No/weak ridge between dorsal fins; caudal & first dorsal fins with dark edges; fin edges pale (transparent alive).
  • Coloration: Gray body, white belly.
  • Distribution: Indo–West Pacific; tropical waters from 34°N–30°S; coasts of Australia, India, Japan, Africa (east coast), Arabian Peninsula, etc.
  • Habitat: Inshore waters; shallow clear to deeper dimly lit environments.
  • Conservation Status: IUCN – Near Threatened.
